Following the loss of their son (Ryan Bruce), a retired sheriff (Kevin Costner) and his wife (Diane Lane) leave their Montana ranch to rescue their grandson from a dangerous family that their daughter in law (Kayli Carter) has married into. They soon discover that the family has no intention of letting the child go. Based on the novel by Larry Watson and directed by Thomas Bezucha (THE FAMILY STONE). An engrossing thriller that is encumbered by a lethargic pacing. I understand that director Bezucha didn't want to make a mere thriller but surely he could have picked up the momentum and still keep the focus on the family dynamics. I also had a problem with Kevin Costner's and especially Diane Lane's characters. When they meet up with the psychotic family and their batshit crazy matriarch (a splendid Lesley Manville), surely it was a tipoff that these crazies will stop at nothing but no, they underestimate them which leads to a bloody outcome. The acting is very good with both Costner and Lane doing good work. With Jeffrey Donovan and Booboo Stewart.
