Happy Go Lovely (1951)

In Edinburgh, after the chauffeur (Hugh Dempster) of a wealthy millionaire (David Niven) gives a chorus girl (Vera-Ellen) a lift to the theater, rumors spread like wildfire that she is the mistress of the millionaire (who she's never met). The producer (Cesar Romero) of the show decides to give her the lead in the hope that her rich "fiance" will put money into the show. Despite the presence of the three leads, this isn't a Hollywood musical but a British one. As a musical, it's pretty dire. Dull songs and uninspired dance numbers that would not be missed if edited out but as a screwball comedy, it works fairly well. It moves along quickly and painlessly and it's over before you know it. Niven is an old hand at this kind of whimsy but Vera-Ellen is quite charming. Directed by H. Bruce Humberstone (I WAKE UP SCREAMING). With Gordon Jackson, Bobby Howe, Diane Hart and Ambrosine Phillpotts.
