If You Could Only Cook (1935)

A down on her luck unemployed girl (Jean Arthur) meets a millionaire auto manufacturer (Herbert Marshall) on a park bench. Thinking he's also down on his luck and looking for a job, she cons him into posing as her husband so that they can get jobs as a cook and butler at a mobster's (Leo Carrillo) mansion. Well, naturally they fall in love even if he is engaged to the snooty Frieda Inescort (THE LETTER). Directed by William A. Seiter. For most of the brief running time (around 70 minutes), this is a charmer of a screwball comedy fueled by a captivating Jean Arthur at her very best. Alas, even considering the brevity of the running time, it runs out of steam toward the end. Pity they couldn't come up with a more spirited ending but it's still a very pleasant entertainment. With Lionel Stander and Alan Edwards.
