Winged Creatures (aka Fragments) (2009)

After a lone gunman walks into a diner and randomly shoots before killing himself, the survivors are left to deal with the psychological aftermath which affects them in different ways. Based on the novel by Roy Freirich and directed by Rowan Woods (THE BOYS). One of the inferior spawns of the Oscar winning ensemble film CRASH that followed in its wake, the film has a compelling hook. The main problem is, unlike CRASH, we’re not invested in any of the characters. We never feel the horror of the massacre, we’re detached voyeurs through out the film. Some of the storylines are egregiously miscalculated like Forest Whitaker who goes on an aimless gambling binge. The most fascinating plot line involves Dakota Fanning who becomes a religious fanatic after the killings to disguise the horrible facts she cannot face. Also starring Kate Beckinsale, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Hudson, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Jackie Earle Haley, Embeth Davidtz and Troy Garity.
