Arizona Dream (1993)

A young man (Johnny Depp) living in New York is dragged to Arizona by his cousin (Vincent Galloperfectly awful) to attend his uncle's (Jerry Lewis in the film's best performance) wedding to a much younger woman (Paulina Porizkova). While there he becomes involved in the toxic relationship of a neurotic mother (Faye Dunaway)who he eventually bedsand her unstable daughter (Lili Taylor). Directed by the Serbian director Emir Kusturicathis oddball surrealistic comedy has an unscriptedimprovised feel to it but to its disadvantageit often feels quirky and eccentric purely for the sake of being quirky and eccentric and one quickly tires of its cast of bizarre characters. Any film in which Jerry Lewis gives the most subdued performance and represents normalcy needs a strongermore coherent narrative than this film is able to furnish. Much of the film has a dream like quality which is the glue that holds it together most of the time but some scenes (like Gallo doing an impression of Cary Grant in NORTH BY NORTHWEST) are cringe inducing. With Michael J. Pollard.
