A rather neurotic young woman (Sarah Jessica Parker) begins to have commitment issues with her fiance (Gil Bellows) when she finds out that her mother (Mia Farrow) is having an affair with the male nurse (Antonio Banderas) at her grandmother's (Mary Chernoff) old folks home. Her fears cement even further as other marital relationships around her begin to flounder. As written and directed by David Frankel (
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA), this is a
faux Woody Allen film set in Miami instead of Manhattan. Its central characters are Jewish, live upscale lives (except for the Hispanic Banderas), obsess on their relationships, every other line is a quip and of course, Allen's ex-muse Farrow in a major role. But that's the problem. It's imitation Woody Allen without Allen's insightful ear for dialogue nor his often uncanny ability to expose the comical side of neuroses. The hothouse Miami locations are attractively shot by Jack Wallner and Pat Field's (
SEX IN THE CITY) costumes are perfect. With Paul Mazursky, Jeremy Piven, Carla Guigino, Naomi Campbell, Kevin Pollak, Kelly Bishop and Ben Stein.
