A String Of Beads (1954)

When a guest cancels at the last minute to a dinner party, the hostess (Brenda Forbes) asks her children's nanny (Angela Lansbury) to fill in. Because of the pearls she's wearing, the other guests assume she's something she isn't ... an aristocrat like them. Based on a short story by W. Somerset Maugham and directed by William Cameron Menzies (INVADERS FROM MARS). Originally shot for television, this is a straightforward tale about assumptions people make because of appearances. Granted a fabrication made by a guest (George Macready) sets the assumptions in motion but it's surprising how people are eager to believe what they want to.
