Big Business (1988)

In West Virginia, the forewoman (Lily Tomlin) of a furniture factory and her twin sister (Bette Midler) go to New York to protest the conglomerate that owns the factory's decision to off load the company. But the head of the conglomerate (Bette Midler) isn't being upfront with her plans for the sale which distresses her soft hearted twin sister (Lily Tomlin). Switched at birth mistaken identity comedies go all the way back to ancient Rome (Plautus' THE MENAECHMI) to Shakespeare (COMEDY OF ERRORS) to Broadway musicals (THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE). They're almost impossible to mess up and this effort directed by Jim Abrahams (AIRPLANE) is one of my favorite movie farces. It doesn't hurt to have two of the best comediennes in film in the four lead roles and its a joy to watch them strut their stuff. Alas, the supporting cast is good but in can't help but pale next to Tomlin and Midler. Breezy and smooth. With Fred Ward, Edward Herrmann, Seth Green, Michael Gross, Deborah Rush and Joe Grifasi.
