The Girl Most Likely (1958)
A young woman (Jane Powell) works in a bank and lives at home with her parents. She has fantasies of meeting Mr. Right. When a real estate agent (Tommy Noonan, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES) proposes, she accepts. When a mechanic (Cliff Robertson proposes, she accepts. When a millionaire playboy (Keith Andes) proposes, she accepts. But she can only marry one, can't she? A remake of the 1941 film TOM, DICK AND HARRY but this time as a musical. It was the last film produced by RKO studios before shutting down and also the last feature film directed by Mitchell Leisen (REMEMBER THE NIGHT). It's actually a cute and pleasant diversion. The songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane (MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS) are good and Gower Champion's choreography is lively. Plus, the film's use of color is imaginative particularly in the Balboa number when the reflecting red lights on a pier turn the ocean red. I wasn't expecting much but I liked what I saw. With Kaye Ballard, Una Merkel and Kelly Brown.
