The Disorderly Orderly (1964)
Although he wants to be a doctor, a young man (Jerry Lewis) must settle for working in a hospital as an orderly because of his squeamishness. Unfortunately, he causes more chaos in the hospital than helping patients. Directed by Frank Tashlin (THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT), this is the last great Jerry Lewis comedy. I don't count KING OF COMEDY as that's not really a Jerry Lewis movie. Some of the visual gags are inspired and as always with Tashlin, the live action cartoon bits are marvelous. But it's not all laughs as there's a darker subplot about a bitter suicidal patient (Susan Oliver) that seems out of place. But that part of the narrative takes a backseat to the slapstick, pratfalls and visual gags that are continuously thrown at us. The supporting cast are game and such comedy stalwarts as Kathleen Freeman, Alice Pearce and Jack E. Leonard all have their turn at bat. With Everett Sloane, Glenda Farrell, Barbara Nichols, Del Moore and Karen Sharpe (THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY) as Lewis' romantic interest.
