Born Reckless (1930)

Early John Ford sound film has a solid narrative but its execution is weak. A mobster (Edmund Lowe) is busted for his participation in a jewel robbery but instead of getting sent to prison, the judge gives him the choice of joining the Army during WWI. In France, he becomes a hero and when he returns home, he walks the straight and narrow while still keeping his mobster pals. His loyalty, however, will soon be tested. The film is stagnant and awkward and the film not as fluid as later Ford films. The Ford-ian humor is recognizable but little else remains that would mark this as a Ford film. The acting is stiff and atrocious across the board. The cast includes Lee Tracy, Frank Albertson, Marguerite Churchill, Ilka Chase and Ward Bond.
