X: The Unknown (1956)

Set in Scotland, a radioactive glob that resembles plum jam (not unlike THE BLOB which would come two years later) emerges from a fissure in the earth and goes on the hunt for radioactive sources to dine on. Directed by Leslie Norman (who replaced Joseph Losey), this is an unassuming B&W piece of science fiction from Britain's Hammer studios. The film's aims are modest and on that level it succeeds although it is highly derivative of THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT.  The nominal star was imported from America, actor Dean Jagger (Oscar winner for 12 O'CLOCK HIGH) as a scientist feverishly working to destroy the goo and allegedly responsible for refusing to work with the blacklisted Losey who he deemed a communist sympathizer hence his replacement. With Leo McKern and Anthony Newley.
