Los Abrazos Rotos (aka Broken Embraces) (2009)

A film writer (Lluis Homar), who was a film director before he became blind, hears of the death of a wealthy financier (Jose Luis Gomez). The film then shifts back and forth between the early 1990s and 2008 as we get lost in a Hitchcockian labyrinth of obsession, revenge and secrets whose arm has far reaching effects. Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar,  this is a marvelous cinematic puzzle, both as an obsessive romance and a mystery. Almodovar's love of cinema is everywhere from his wide screen compositions to the homages. Just a few examples: the the hero's blindness is a tip to Sirk's MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION and his adopted name Harry Caine a nod to Michael Caine as Harry Palmer in THE IPCRESS FILE and even a wink to Michael Powell's PEEPING TOM as well as Almodovar's own WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. Excellent work by Penelope Cruz as the object of obsession. With Blanca Portillo, Tamar Novas, Rossy De Palma and an aged Angela Molina (THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE) as Cruz's mother.
