Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (1961)

Genial science fiction adventure from producer/director Irwin Allen is a well crafted sample of slick Hollywood studio film making. When the Van Allen radiation belt catches fire, a scientist and maverick Admiral (Walter Pidgeon) decides to take matters into his own hands and fire a missile into the fiery belt to blow it up. Meanwhile, the rest of the world hunts him down in order to stop him. The special effects are quite good, the pacing tight and if having both a giant squid and a giant octopus in the film is a case of overkill, one can forgive Allen his transgressions. The top notch cast includes Joan Fontaine as a psychiatrist, Barbara Eden as Pidgeon’s secretary, Peter Lorre as a physicist, Robert Sterling as the sub’s captain, Frankie Avalon, Michael Ansara, Henry Daniell, Regis Toomey and Skip Ward.
