Family Honeymoon (1949)

A widow (Claudette Colbert) with three children and an architect (Fred MacMurray) marry and look forward to a Grand Canyon honeymoon. But when her sister (Lillian Bronson), who was to look after the kids during the honeymoon breaks her leg, the newlyweds have no choice but to take the kids on their honeymooon. Based on the novel by Homer Croy and directed by Claude Binyon (THE SAXON CHARM). A predictable "wholesome" by the numbers family comedy that wears out its welcome very quickly. No one thinks of Colbert and MacMurray as a movie team but this was their seventh and final movie together. Their chemistry is apparent and they make nice foils for each other but the trite script pretty much torpedoes any chance of a quality comedy. The three kids (Gigi Perreau, Jimmy Hunt, Peter Miles) are obnoxious and cause all sorts of unnecessary complications but we're supposed to find their escapades amusing which I most certainly did not. In fact, I'd call this film an advertisement for childfree marraiges! With Rita Johnson, Chill Wills, Wally Brown and Hattie McDaniel.
