Set in 1997, a New York journalist (Jennifer Aniston) returns to her Pasadena hometown in Southern California for her sister's (Mena Suvari) wedding. It is there that she discovers her family's secret past history. Her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) was the inspiration for Mrs. Robinson in THE GRADUATE. Directed by Rob Reiner, RIP (A FEW GOOD MEN). While the premise is intriguing, the film had a creepy vibe to me. Aniston's character suspects that the man (Kevin Costner) who was the inspiration for Benjamin in THE GRADUATE may be her father and she ends up sleeping with him. Even if he isn't her birth father, this is a man that bedded her grandmother, mother and now her. Something is a little twisted here. The movie had a troubled production history. After the film started, the cinematographer was fired and major cast members replaced. It's not a bad movie but it's seriously questionable. What's the point? The film wants to titillate us but falls back on a traditional bourgeois romcom happy ending. MacLaine is solid but Costner and Aniston fall back on all too familiar past work. With Mark Ruffalo, Kathy Bates, Richard Jenkins, Christopher McDonald and George Hamilton.
