Four's A Crowd (1938)
A public relations man (Errol Flynn) cons his best friend (Patric Knowles), a newspaper publisher, into giving him control of the editorial content of his newspaper. Their rivalry extends to the two women in their life: a madcap heiress (Olivia De Havilland) and a reporter (Rosalind Russell). Directed by Michael Curtiz, this screwball comedy (is there a genre that guy didn't have his fingers in?) is fairly amusing. Sort of a kissin' cousin to LIBELED LADY. Flynn is decent enough though I couldn't help but see Clark Gable in the part. De Havilland is adorable and Knowles makes a great pompous stiff (and he's better looking than Ralph Bellamy, too). Though third billed, the film belongs to Rosalind Russell in what seems a trial run for her Hildy Johnson in HIS GIRL FRIDAY two years later. As with all good screwballs, there's a marvelous supporting cast of first rate character actors including Walter Connolly, Margaret Hamilton, Franklin Pangborn, Melville Cooper, Hugh Herbert and Carole Landis.
