Alice In Wonderland (2010)
Tim Burton’s latest film isn’t really an adaptation of the Lewis Carroll book as such. The story of Carroll’s Alice has already happened. Alice (a charmless Mia Wasikowska) is now a young woman engaged to a pompous twit and unhappy with her situation. Back down the rabbit hole she goes and meets up with her old friends and enemies and the truth of the matter is that Burton’s Underland (Alice didn’t hear correctly the first time) is nowhere near as fascinating as Carroll’s Wonderland. Burton turns ALICE into a big splashy, CGI laden extravaganza complete with a massive battle between good versus evil that wouldn’t be out of place in LORD OF THE RINGS. Since ALICE wasn’t filmed in 3D (the way AVATAR was) but done after the fact, the 3D while very good can’t complete with the clarity and breathtaking sharpness of Cameron’s opus. While Johnny Depp gets top billing as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen steals the movie! Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover co-star.
