Sea Devils (1953)
It's 1800 and England and France are at war. An English spy (Yvonne De Carlo) is sent to France in an attempt to ferret out invasion plans. But a smuggler (Rock Hudson), who falls under her spell unintentionally botches her plans and her cover. Based on the novel TOILERS OF THE SEA by Victor Hugo and directed by the veteran Raoul Walsh. This is an average but nonetheless enjoyable swashbuckler cocktail. De Carlo looks quite fetching and Hudson was on the rise here at the beginning of his stardom. Shot in bright Technicolor by Wilkie Cooper (JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS), the film takes advantage of being shot on location in France and the Channel Islands rather than a studio. It's fun if you're not too demanding. With Maxwell Reed as a traitorous smuggler, Gerard Oury as Napoleon and Bryan Forbes (before he became a director of such films as THE WHISPERERS) as Hudson's sidekick.
