Keep 'Em Flying (1941)
After an arrogant and self absorbed stunt pilot (Dick Foran) decides to enlist with the Army Air Corps, his two assistants (Bud Abbott, Lou Costello) decide to join up too. Directed by Arthur Lubin, this is one of the better Abbott & Costello vehicles with some of their best gags. The ordering lunch routine featuring Martha Raye as twins is hilarious, the punch line to the runaway torpedo is a hoot and silly little touches like Ray kissing Costello whose white bread sandwich turns to toast during the kiss. The movie gets bogged down whenever it moves away from A&C and concentrates on the secondary leads, Foran and Carol Bruce. Why the need to pad out the film with the insipid secondary romantic subplot, I don't know. I suppose the film makers thought 1940s audiences needed the relief from the comedy antics. Raye also gets the best musical number in the film, a boogie woogie called Big Foot Pete which received a best song Oscar nomination (inexplicably credited to another movie!). With William Gargan and Charles Lang.
