Zack And Reba (1998)

When a young bride to be (Brittany Murphy) decides against getting married, her fiance (Thomas Jane) commits suicide. A crazy old lady (Debbie Reynolds) decides her grandson (Sean Patrick Flanery), who carries the skeletal remains of his dead wife with him, would be a good match for the bereaved girl and takes him to the fiance's funeral and plays matchmaker. From there, things get well ... pretty weird. Directed by Nicole Bettauer, this offbeat romantic comedy tries too hard to be quirky. Everybody in it is eccentric, freakish or just plain insane. It crosses the line into ridiculousness but one has to admire its off the wall situations. Murphy is adorable although her character is unstable. We're never sure if she's just a broken human being or downright crazy. Reynolds is a hoot as the squirrel killing ("I caught him poopin' in my front yard") small town nut case. This should have been a real sleeper. I think the screenplay is okay but the execution is uneven. With Martin Mull, Kathy Najimy and Michael Jeter.
