Princess O'Rourke (1943)

An exiled princess (Olivia De Havilland) in New York during WWII passes herself off as a refugee to an airline pilot (Robert Cummings) and they fall in love. Not knowing she is European royalty, he proposes and she is conflicted. Better known as a writer (WHITE CHRISTMAS, FURY) than a director, Norman Krasna does double duty here. Directing his own script which inexplicably won him a best original screenplay Oscar. It's a romantic fantasy that's a precursor to ROMAN HOLIDAY, only this time with a happy ending. The film has a certain prosaic charm that eventually runs out of steam and the last twenty minutes or so are pretty tiresome. The FDR jokes are pretty topical and irrelevant today and the thought of De Havilland tied to the bland Cummings for the rest of her life is too upsetting to contemplate. With Jane Wyman, Jack Carson, Charles Coburn, Gladys Cooper, Harry Davenport and Julie Bishop.
