Island Of Desire (aka Saturday Island) (1952)

Set during WWII, a young marine (Tab Hunter) and a nurse (Linda Darnell) are shipwrecked on a South Pacific island after the ship they're on is hit by a Japanese mine. He's sullen and immature and she's a spinster and at first they're antagonistic toward each other but it's only a matter of time till the passion hits. When an RAF pilot (Donald Gray) crashes his plane on the island, the marine has competition. Based on the novel by Hugh Brooke and directed by Stuart Heisler (THE GLASS KEY). It's standard male and female stranded on a desert island fare but with an interesting older woman, younger man twist. This was Hunter's first major role and he comes across as quite awkward so one is never sure if it's the actor or the character. Darnell seems miscast as a spinster, she's even referred to as an old maid. But she's as gorgeous as ever. Who wouldn't fall in love with her? Filmed in Jamaica, the lush tropics look quite inviting as photographed in Technicolor by Oswald Morris (LOLITA). With Diana Decker and John Laurie.
