Flesh And The Spur (1957)

When his twin brother is killed by an escaped prisoner, a farmer (John Agar, awful as ever) goes after his killer and along the way connects with a mysterious gunfighter (Mike Connors, also one of the movie's producers) searching for the gang that Agar is also seeking. An Indian girl (Marla English, who the film finds various excuses to undress) joins them. Directed by Edward L. Cahn, this low budget indie is a conventional revenge oater. The screenplay is adequate but it could have used some style. I can't help but think how much better the film would be with an Anthony Mann or a Budd Boetticher directing. Still, it's a serviceable western if you're not too demanding. The cipher that is John Agar cancels out any interest in his character which leaves Mike Connors to take center stage. At a brief running time of 77 minutes, the film knows better than to wear out its welcome. With Raymond Hatton and Joyce Meadows.
