Young At Heart (1954)
Three sisters (Doris Day, Dorothy Malone, Elisabeth Fraser) are all attracted to a young composer (Gig Young) but he only has eyes for one sister (Day). Enter a hostile "chip on his shoulder" songwriter (Frank Sinatra) hired to assist Young in arranging his songs and conflict arises. He's the cynical fly in the ointment of the wholesome all American family. Based on the novel SISTER ACT by Fannie Hurst (IMITATION OF LIFE) which was previously made into a 1938 movie called FOUR DAUGHTERS with John Garfield and Priscilla Lane. Directed by Gordon Douglas, the film is peppered with songs by Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and the Gershwins but it's not really a musical. it's a drama with music. Sinatra is tailor made for the part and he and Day have a nice opposites attract chemistry. For most of the film, it's strong stuff but the ending is abrupt and horribly saccharine. With Ethel Barrymore as the family aunt, Robert Keith as the father and Alan Hale Jr. and Lonny Chapman as beaus of the other two sisters.
