Hot Saturday (1932)
A young bank clerk (Nancy Carroll) becomes the target of small town gossip when she returns home in the wee hours of the morning after spending the evening with a notorious playboy (Cary Grant). She's innocent but the gossips make her life a living hell. When an old boyfriend (Randolph Scott) returns to town to rekindle their romance, it looks like a way out for her but not if the town has its way. Based on the novel by Harvey Fergusson and directed by William A. Seiter. This is a racy pre-code film with several scenes quite daring for the era like when Carroll wakes up naked under a blanket and it's obvious Scott undressed her or when Carroll rips off the panties of another girl. While not quite PEYTON PLACE, it offers an unsettling view of how mean spirited hypocrites can ruin lives. With Edward Woods, Lilian Bond and Jane Darwell.
