40 Pounds Of Trouble (1963)
When her father (Gregg Palmer) abandons her at a Lake Tahoe casino, a 5 year old girl (Claire Wilcox) is taken care of by the casino's manager (Tony Curtis) until her father returns. But the father never returns. Based on LITTLE MISS MARKER by Damon Runyon and directed by Norman Jewison (MOONSTRUCK). This third adaptation of the Runyon chestnut (made in 1934, remade in 1949 and a fourth time in 1980) is inoffensive fluff. It's all meant to tug at the heartstrings of course but little Claire Wilcox doesn't quite have the adorableness down yet (though she's certainly more pleasing than Shirley Temple in the 1934 version) but at least she's not irritating. There's a certain built in charm to the proceedings which might account for why it has been made four times. The 1949 version called SORROWFUL JONES with Bob Hoe is still the one to beat. The large supporting cast includes Suzanne Pleshette as the love interest, Phil Silvers, Kevin McCarthy, Karen Steele, Diane Ladd, Richard Mulligan, Mary Murphy, Stubby Kaye, Allyn Ann McLerie and Larry Storch.
