The Perfect Furlough (1958)

Blake Edwards (PINK PANTHER) directs this featherweight romantic comedy written by Stanley Shapiro (PILLOW TALK). A corporal in the army (Tony Curtis) wins a furlough with an actress (Linda Cristal THE ALAMO) known as the Argentine bombshell but she has a chaperone (Elaine Stritch) courtesy of her agent (Keenan Wynn) and he has a chaperone (Janet Leigh) courtesy of the Army. The bulk of the film deals with Curtis trying to subvert the two chaperones in order to indulge in hanky panky with Cristal. As inconsequential as it is, it’s handsomely shot (though it appears Paris was created on the Universal back lot) in CinemaScope and the cast are more than up for the farce though the film has that sniggery attitude about sex so prevalent in the 1950s. With Troy Donahue, Les Tremayne, Marcel Dalio and King Donovan.
